Got root? How to hack a Palm Pre

I just got root on my palm pre! Thanks to the guys and gals over at webos-internals.org, it’s extremely easy, but I found the documentation a bit cryptic so I thought I’d give it a shot.

Overview:

This guide was written for windows xp, I personally used windows xp pro 64bit with no problems.

Getting Started:

  1. First you need to download and install the Palm SDK
  2. Next, put your Palm Pre into “dev” mode. Go to the Launcher application (where you see the list of all your apps) and type the following:
    upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart
Once you type in the last letter of the code, an option will come up to enable dev mode. Go ahead and enable it and then it will reboot your phone. (I made the mistake of enabling dev mode on the emulator and not actually getting root on my pre, don’t be dumb like me).
  3. Once rebooted, simply plug the Palm Pre into your computer that has the SDK on it. When prompted, set the mode to ‘Just Charge”.
  4. Next just open up a command prompt and issue the following command:
    novacom -t open tty://
  5. Now you’re connected as root!
  6. Finally, if you want to maintain root access on the pre you should run this script from the guys over at webos-internals.org it will prompt you for input and install an SSH server on the phone for you. Be sure to check out some of the sweet homebrew apps and keep hacking!

Plesk Hack: Email and FTP Usernames and Passwords

I wrote this simple script for work. This script allows us to gather all the username and password information on the server to let us troubleshoot faster. This is an early version of the script, I plan on added more functionality to improve the speed of troubleshooting. This script was not intended for malicious purposes, please do not use it for such.

Edit: It looks like a few people out there have been publishing my code without attribution.  I really don’t mind if you post my code, but please give me credit.  The one I’ve found didn’t even change the header (with my full name in it) of the script or the “doneskies” at the end.  Have some class and give me proper attribution.

La Fonera 2100 USB Power Hack

I’ve been trying to think of ideas to power my Fon without needing a 120vac outlet. Luckily for us, The La Fonera router is powered off of 5V. USB provides 5v. How convenient. My favorite part about this hack, is that it still allows you to power the Fon router with the provided wall adapter, this is just an added option if you don’t have an outlet handy.
